Something is happening in Switzerland. In addition to the well-known smaller battery packs for laptops, tablets, mobile phones and electrical appliances, etc., which mostly have to be imported from Asia, our country is now increasingly entering the production of larger battery systems. Reason: Booming electromobility demands ever better and more efficient supply systems. Those who can supply batteries and large batteries will have good cards in the future business with green traffic. The Swiss industrial group ABB does not want to leave the business to the Asians and invests in the production of energy storage systems at home.

In Baden, ABB commissions a production facility for battery modules. These are to be used primarily in public transport, on buses and trains, and thus help to make public transport more environmentally friendly. The facility was recently presented to the public. Energy storage systems are a key technology for the future of sustainable mobility. They play an important role in the electrification and decarbonization of road and rail transport: High-performance energy storage systems are, for example, a prerequisite for the operation of electric buses and trucks and enable, among other things, recuperation. In addition, the energy storage systems increase the flexibility of trolleybuses, which thanks to them can travel longer much distances without overhead lines. Unlike in Switzerland, there are still countless non-electrified railway lines in many European countries.

By integrating an energy storage system, diesel multiple units can be converted to diesel hybrid vehicles, which reduces CO2 emissions by a scale of 30% and allows significant energy savings through recuperation. In general, these energy storage systems open up many opportunities for transport companies to retrofit their vehicle fleets for more sustainable mobility.

Example: In the city of Zurich, the trolleybuses of lines 33 and 72 between Albisriederplatz and Hardplatz already operate as planned in battery mode. Today, construction sites can usually be carried out without temporary over headlines, as long as the continuous energy supply of the entire network is guaranteed. Service lines and complex overhead contact junctions are gradually dismantled with operational and economic sense.
